The Ford Securilock Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) is a security feature designed to prevent vehicle theft by using an engine immobilizer. This ensures that only a properly coded key can start the engine.

What Is The Ford SecuriLock PATS System?

PATS incorporates a transponder in the key that communicates with the vehicle's engine control module (ECM). The transponder sends a unique code to the engine immobilizer when the key is inserted and turned. If the code does not match, the engine won’t start.

When Was The PATS System Introduced? 

The Ford Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) was introduced in 1996. It was available in a wide range of Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury models. How Do I Change My Ford Key Fob Battery?

Your Ford’s key fob battery should last a long time, but eventually, it will go flat. When this happens, you can still access your car using the physical key, but you won’t be able to use any remote features. Replacing the battery is a simple process; you won’t lose the key’s programming while the battery is out.

For Key Fobs With A Physical Key Or One That Can Be Popped Out:

  1. Pop out the key on fobs that have a folding key.
  2. There is a small hole in the space where the key is housed. Insert a small screwdriver into it and press down until the bottom section of the key fob pops out.
  3. For fobs with a physical key, just separate the backing plate with your screwdriver.
  4. Remove the bottom section and pop off the back panel.
  5. The battery will be accessible now. Remove it and replace it with the same type.
  6. Follow steps 1-3 in reverse order to reassemble the key.

ForKeyless Entry Key Fobs:

  1. Press the small button on the top of the key fob. Pull the emergency key out. 
  2. Use the key to remove the backing panel.
  3. The battery will be visible now and can be removed. Replace it with the same specification battery.
  4. Press the backing panel back into place and replace the emergency key in its slot.

How Do I Reprogram My SecuriLock or PATS Ford Key Fob?

You can reprogram your PATS key fob if you have either one (PATS 1) or two (PATS 2) functioning PATS keys available. So, if you lose a key, you should always get a new one because you can program it yourself. If you lose both, you will need to contact your Ford dealer for assistance and pay for programming.

The Reprogramming Process

Before you can program a new key, you will need to have at least one original key for your Ford. The new key will need to be cut, either by a locksmith or the dealer, to match your existing key. 

  1. Put the original working key into the ignition.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON without starting the car. Wait about three seconds until the "theft" light turns off, then remove the key.
  3. Insert the new key within 10 seconds of this procedure and turn the ignition to ON. As soon as the "theft" light turns off turn the key to the OFF position but do not remove it.
  4. The key programming should be completed within 30 seconds. 

This process can be repeated if you need any additional PATS keys.

How Do I Replace My Key Fob?
