  The DPFE Sensor for the 2000-2004 Ford F-Series is also referred to as the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR. It operates as a barometric pressure sensor for the vehicle's EGR system. Typically, it is a winged black box that is connected to the upper middle section of the firewall. There are 2 rubber hoses coming from it that descend down to the EGR pipe and a plug that connects to it from the firewall.

  A malfunctioning DPFE sensor will begin to send bad information to the PCM, causing it to assume that less gas is being consumed than is actually true. This mistaken assumption leads to the PCM opening up the actuator too far. Lean misfires are the most common result of this failure. If your DPFE sensor begins to malfunction, it can be replaced by unfastening it from the firewall and removing the wire hoses and wire harness. The new sensor must be connected properly, then bolted to the firewall.
