  The 2002-2003 Ford Explorer is designed to take you anywhere you want to go, regardless of the terrain. This SUV is always ready for an adventure. Great gas mileage is a part of that adventure. If the Explorer is not getting the most fuel efficient mileage that the factory intended, there may be a problem with the emissions system. The Differential Pressure Feedback Exhaust (DPFE) sensor was created as a part of the emissions system to make sure that the proper amount of exhaust flows into the exhaust manifold. This part monitors the pressure of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve. If this part is not working properly, you may need to replace it. An indicator of an improperly functioning DPFE sensor is lower than normal gas mileage.

  When you replace this sensor, you should only use genuine factory Ford OEM parts. The DPFE sensor that Ford put into the emissions system works exactly as the factory intended to get you the gas mileage that was advertised with your Explorer.
