Many modern Fords come with an array of high-tech features, but one of the most interesting, useful, and sometimes misunderstood bits of kit has been available since 1980. We are referring to those five little keys placed close to the driver’s door handle. Initially called the Keyless Entry System, it allows owners to access their vehicles without the key by entering a pre-set code.

Does Ford Still Have The Keypad Entry?

Yes, the keypad entry system is still available on some new Fords. However, it has been discontinued on the Edge and Bronco and has moved from the standard equipment list to a dealer-installed option on F-150 trucks and the Escape SUV.

The popularity of keyless entry systems, smartphone digital keys, and other high-tech solutions has mostly eliminated the need for the Keypad Securicode system. However, it is still a helpful device that allows the user to lock their keys and valuables in their car or allow others to access the vehicle without them being able to drive it.

These features are not always possible with other vehicle entry solutions. Going forward, it is unlikely that the Securicode system will be offered for much longer on new Ford models, even as an option.

How Do You Use The Ford Keypad Entry?

All keypad functions require each number to be pressed within 5 seconds of each other. Pressing too quickly may prevent the system from working. Keypad function include:

• Unlocking The Driver’s Door: Enter your five-digit code
• Unlocking All The Doors: Enter your five-digit code and then press the 3•4 key.
• Locking All Doors: Press and hold the 7•8 and 9•0 keys simultaneously.
• Opening The Trunk: Enter your five-digit code and the press the 5•6 key.

How Do I Change My Ford Keypad Lock Code?

The process for programming a personal code depends on your Ford model. If you forget your personal code or make an error, the factory-set code will always work. To program a personal entry code using the keypad:

1. Enter the five-digit factory code then press the 1•2 key.
2. Enter your personal five-digit code.
3. Press the 1•2 key.

The doors will lock and unlock to confirm the new code.

Five personal codes can be programmed by following the first 2 steps and then pressing 3•4, 5•6, 7•8 and 9•0 after each code entry. To program a personal entry code with SYNC3:

1. Access settings on your SYNC screen.
2. Choose the Vehicle tile then press the Door Keypad Code.
3. Enter the factory five-digit code.
4. Click on Add then follow the instructions to add your personal codes.

To program a personal entry code with SYNC with MyFord Touch: 

1. Press the Gear icon on your SYNC screen then press the Vehicle tile
2. Select Door Keypad Code then enter your five-digit factory code.
3. Select Add and follow the prompts to program your personal codes.

Why Is My Ford Keypad Entry Not Working?

The Ford keypad is a robust unit designed to withstand adverse weather conditions and regular use. However, if it fails, these are some of the most common reasons for it to do so:

• Dead Keypad Battery – will need to replace the entire keypad as the battery is integrated into the unit
• Bad Car Battery – This may also stop your keypad from working. If the keypad is still not operational after you have changed the car battery, it may need reprogramming or replacing.
• Incorrect Code – After seven incorrect attempts (or 35 consecutive button pushes) the keypad will flash and become disabled for one minute.

Can I Replace A Keypad Myself?

Yes. In most cases, keypad replacement is a DIY job. On models where the keypad is dealer-installed, the keypad can be pried loose with a flathead screwdriver by inserting it into the top of the unit (2) and pulling from the side (1). Unclip the wiring harness and fit the new unit. 

Factory-installed keypads are flush-mounted and wired directly into the control module. These may need to be replaced by the dealer. Remember that whenever you replace a keypad, transmitter, or control module, all the transmitters must also be reprogrammed. Your Ford dealer will be able to do this for you.
