How To Replace A Ford Water Pump

Tools And Materials Needed

In addition to a new Ford OEM water pump and gaskets, you'll need the following tools: 

  • Socket set and wrenches
  • Screwdrivers
  • Drain pan
  • Coolant
  • Torque wrench
  • Belt tensioner tool
  • Putty knife or scraper 
  • Rubber mallet 
  • Mechanic's gloves (or nitrile gloves) and safety goggles

Step-By-Step Guide To Replacing A Ford Water Pump

1. Preparation 

  1. Safety First: Park your vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical mishaps.
  2. Drain the Coolant: Place a drain pan under the radiator, open the drain valve, and allow the coolant to empty.

2. Remove The Old Water Pump

  1. Remove the Serpentine Belt: Use the belt tensioner tool to relieve tension and remove the drive belt from the water pump pulley.
  2. Disconnect Hoses: Carefully disconnect the hoses attached to the water pump. Be prepared for some residual coolant to spill.
  3. Unbolt the Water Pump: Remove the bolts holding the water pump using the appropriate socket. Keep track of the bolts, as they may be of different lengths.
  4. Remove the Water Pump: Gently pry the water pump away from the engine block. A few taps with a rubber mallet can help if it's stuck.

3. Install The New Water Pump 

  1. Clean the Mounting Surface: Ensure the mounting surface on the engine block is clean and free of old gasket material. Use a scraper or putty knife if necessary.
  2. Apply Gasket or Gasket Maker: If your new water pump uses a gasket, place it on the pump. If using a gasket maker, apply a thin, even layer on the mounting surface.
  3. Position the New Pump: Carefully place the new water pump onto the engine block, aligning it with the bolt holes. If the water pump assembly also includes the thermostat housing, consider replacing the thermostat with a new OEM part before reinstalling the pump. 
  4. Bolt the Water Pump: Insert and tighten the bolts by hand to ensure proper alignment. Then, use a torque wrench to tighten them to the manufacturer's specifications.

4. Reassemble

  1. Reconnect Hoses: Attach the hoses to the new water pump and secure them with clamps. This is also a good time to replace the radiator hoses if they are old or showing signs of wear. 
  2. Reinstall the Belt: Use the belt tensioner tool to reinstall the drive belt onto the water pump pulley.
  3. Refill Coolant: Close the radiator drain valve and refill the cooling system with the recommended type and amount of coolant. 

5. Final Checks

  1. Reconnect the Battery: Once the battery is reconnected, start the engine. 
  2. Check for Leaks: Let the engine run and check for any leaks around the water pump and hoses.
  3. Monitor Temperature: Keep an eye on the engine temperature gauge to ensure it's operating within the normal range.
